If you have carpeting in your home, a vacuum cleaner is an absolute must. You can't hope to keep a carpet clean without vacuuming it on a regular basis. Once you have purchased a vacuum cleaner, you would probably like it to last a very long time. Furthermore, you'd probably like it to perform well for as long as possible. To achieve that, you need to maintain your vacuum cleaner as well as you can. By keeping a few simple tips in mind, you can extend the life of your vacuum cleaner and keep it running like a champ for a very long time; your carpeting will thank you for it!
Clean the Roller Brush
The roller brush is the thing with bristles on it that rotates along the bottom of the vacuum cleaner. It works to loosen debris from carpet so that it can be sucked inside the vacuum cleaner. Over time, hair and other debris can become twisted around the roller brush. If too much debris accumulates, its efficiency drops. After a while, the stress from all of that debris can weaken the vacuum cleaner's belt. For these reasons, it pays to clean the roller brush on your vacuum cleaner regularly.
Don't Exceed the Fill Line
Bagless vacuum cleaners are very convenient. Most models feature clear receptacles that collect the dust and debris that are sucked up by the vacuum cleaner. If you look at your vacuum cleaner, you will probably see a clearly defined fill line on its receptacle. You shouldn't allow debris to surpass that line. If you do, the suction force of the vacuum could be compromised. Your vacuum won't work as efficiently, so it will take you longer to get your carpet clean. This can be easily avoided by keeping an eye on that fill line.
Clear Clogs Right Away
If you notice a reduction in the suctioning power of your vacuum, odds are that a clog has developed somewhere. While you may just want to plow forward with vacuuming your carpet, you should actually stop right away and address the issue. By letting a clog go, you could cause additional problems. Besides, your vacuum cleaner isn't going to work as well when it has a clog in it. Keeping your carpeting clean shouldn't be a major ordeal. By handling clogs right when they happen, you can keep the stress to an absolute minimum.
Do a Walk-Through before You Vacuum
Even if you have a very powerful vacuum cleaner, it's only designed to handle dust and small debris. You should avoid passing it over large or metal items because they can damage the machine. To avoid any issues, you should always walk through the room that you are going to vacuum before you get started. Keep your eyes peeled for objects that could pose problems for your vacuum cleaner. It is better to be safe than sorry. If you are unsure about something, go ahead and move it. Move cords out of harm's way too.
Stop if You Hear Strange Noises
Even if you are diligent about picking up debris before you get started, there's still a chance that you'll inadvertently pass over something that the vacuum can't handle. When that does happen, you will be aware of it fairly quickly. Loud, abrasive sounds will occur. Don't wait to see if the sounds stop. Quit vacuuming immediately to find out what is wrong. If you continue on, you could seriously damage the vacuum cleaner. If you have run over a metal object, be careful - it could be very hot from passing around the roller brush. Wait a second before you touch it.
Clean and Change Filters Regularly
Modern vacuum cleaners usually include at least one or two filters. Some filters can be washed; make sure to do that every now and then to keep the machine working at peak efficiency. Other filters, including HEPA filters, must be replaced periodically. Mark your calendar and make sure to replace such filters when the time is right. If you don't, the purifying effects of your vacuum cleaner will be compromised and your floors won't get as clean.
